How AI Can Usher in a New Era of Privacy and Trust

Published on

Picture this: Every second, somewhere in the world, a staggering amount of data is flowing through the digital realm. In the time it takes you to read this sentence, an avalanche of data has been generated—your morning coffee order, your latest health check-up, the hundredth daily photo of your dog.

Today, we stand at the precipice of a new era where artificial intelligence (AI) promises to reshape our world in ways we’ve only dreamed of. But this promise comes with a critical question: How do we harness AI’s transformative power without compromising our fundamental right to privacy?

A Rapidly Shifting Landscape

When the first Data Privacy Day was held in 2007, the digital world was almost unrecognizable compared to what we see today. Netflix had just launched a streaming service, Apple debuted the first iPhone, and most people’s social media concerns were limited to their MySpace “Top 8”. Back then, with just 1.15 billion internet users globally (a mere 17% of the world’s population), an individual’s digital footprint was limited to basic online activities like email or social media, and online privacy concerns revolved around the odd spam in your inbox.

“More than 5 billion people (nearly 70% of the global population) are navigating today’s increasingly complex digital landscape, generating more than double the data in a day than we produced throughout all of 2007.”

Fast forward to 2025, and more than 5 billion people (nearly 70% of the global population) are navigating today’s increasingly complex digital landscape, generating more than double the data in a day than we produced throughout all of 2007. Our digital and physical lives are now inseparable, with every click, swipe and interaction forming a detailed portrait of who we are. They have also expanded exponentially, encompassing everything from our shopping habits and entertainment preferences to our most intimate health data—becoming an inseparable part of our existence and blurring the lines between physical and virtual worlds.

This massive expansion has ushered in an era of unprecedented innovation but also opened up a Pandora’s box of complex data privacy challenges. Large-scale data breaches, once a distant concern, are now a recurring theme in our headlines and inboxes. In response, governments around the world have reacted with stronger privacy laws: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, the Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in California and Bill C-27 here in Canada—but these regulations often struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology.

Changing the Game With AI

Enter AI, a game-changing technology and with a coordinated effort, we can ensure it becomes a force for good in our increasingly digital world. As AI experiences an unprecedented speed of adoption, this pivotal moment offers us an opportunity to build a shared future that includes robust privacy protections and values ethical usage, transparency and security above all.

“The true value of AI is determined by the quality of the data we feed into it and the principles we instill in its design.”

AI is becoming an integral part of business—helping everyone from the local mom-and-pop shop down the street to the glass towers of large enterprises. However, the key to unlocking its potential lies not in the specific applications of AI, which will inevitably evolve and change over time, but in the foundation upon which we build these technologies. The true value of AI is determined by the quality of the data we feed into it and the principles we instill in its design. Just as the key to exceptional wine lies in the quality of the grapes, not in the bottle. Data used ethically and responsibly is the key to building trust—the critical differentiator in an ever-changing landscape. When customers trust that their data is safe and their privacy respected, they’ll keep coming back.

At TELUS, we’ve embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. When we first began exploring AI, we understood its immense potential but also recognized the serious risks of data leaks and misuse. Our vision was clear: we wanted to harness AI’s immense potential, but we wanted to do it right, safeguarding the trust our customers and team members place in us. Rather than relying on external vendors alone or hastily rolling out public tools to our employees, TELUS and TELUS Digital, our international subsidiary dedicated to customer experience innovation, chose to build Fuel iX™, an enterprise-grade AI engine that offers cutting-edge AI capabilities with robust governance, privacy protocols and security measures.

Building Trust Through Innovation: TELUS’ Fuel iX Approach

The processes TELUS implemented to develop Fuel iX are more than just a technology solution; they are a blueprint for responsible innovation. We’ve proactively embedded privacy principles at every stage of the AI lifecycle, treating data privacy not as an afterthought but as the foundation upon which everything else rests. This approach required rigorous collaboration between data scientists, privacy and security experts, legal counsel and external certifying bodies, ensuring that all data passing through followed stringent controls for collection, handling and storage.

“We’ve proactively embedded privacy principles at every stage of the AI lifecycle, treating data privacy not as an afterthought but as the foundation upon which everything else rests.”

We’ve built and deployed these AI tools to every single TELUS team member so they can safely and comfortably experiment, using AI to be more productive and creative in their work. But the impact of Fuel iX extends far beyond just TELUS. We’ve made responsible AI more accessible than ever, enabling businesses of all sizes to unlock the promise of AI without compromising on ethics or data security. From bustling startups to established large enterprises, organizations can now build their AI future on a foundation of trust and transparency, ensuring that innovation doesn’t come at the cost of privacy.

Responsible innovation also influenced our technical design choices. We created Fuel iX to be vendor-agnostic, meaning it can integrate any large language model while preserving the highest security standards. Data processed through Fuel iX remains within carefully managed environments, giving both TELUS and our clients peace of mind that sensitive information will not be inadvertently exposed to unvetted public AI services. The platform’s unified architecture means that whenever we enhance security or add new capabilities, all existing deployments automatically benefit.

“Time spent now saves a lot of trouble later. By prioritizing these principles early, businesses can protect themselves and their customers while fostering trust and long-term success.”

This lesson applies to all businesses, big and small, including those that don’t have in-house AI teams. To unlock AI’s potential as a force for good, businesses must embrace responsible practices—and the roadmap to responsible AI adoption begins with embedding privacy principles into every stage of development. Time spent now saves a lot of trouble later. By prioritizing these principles early, businesses can protect themselves and their customers while fostering trust and long-term success. It’s important to start by evaluating your data practices, collaborating with privacy and security experts and choosing platforms that prioritize transparency and ethical design.

Looking ahead, TELUS remains committed to refining Fuel iX, improving digital literacy and online safety for all age groups with our TELUS Wise workshops, exploring new AI breakthroughs and sharing what we learn. Our vision is to empower everyone—from enterprise leaders to small-business owners—to embrace AI responsibly. Together, we can ensure AI becomes a force for good—transforming lives, businesses and communities without compromising trust.
